Frequently Asked Questions

  • What are assistive devices?

Assistive devices are tools and gadgets that will help increase independence in daily living activities. Commonly used assistive devices include walking aids, wheelchairs, transfer boards, raised toilet seats and dressing sticks.

Aged care physiotherapists can provide advice on appropriate assistive devices for your needs as well as providing a comprehensive assessment of your functional abilities and limitations. They can also provide education on the safe use of these devices, which is especially important for people with mobility or balance impairments.

  • What is gait training?

Gait training is a type of exercise that helps to improve walking ability. It can involve the practice of different steps and may also involve the use of assistive devices such as walkers or wheelchairs. Gait training can help reduce the risk of falls in older adults with balance or mobility impairments.

  • How can physiotherapy assist those who have arthritis or osteoporosis?

Physiotherapy can help to reduce the pain and stiffness associated with arthritis and osteoporosis. It can also provide support in managing these conditions, including exercise instruction, hydrotherapy, advice on pacing activities and relaxation techniques. Physiotherapists may also use manual therapy techniques such as joint mobilisations or massage to improve the range of motion and reduce discomfort.
